Meet Tirunesh Dibaba, an Ethiopian distance runner who won the gold for the women’s 5000m event during the Beijing Olympics. Tirunesh had also won the 10000m event a week back. See photos, video and her biography here.
“I have won gold in the world championships many times but I was expecting something really special at the Olympics and I got it. I’m delighted”
Tirunesh Dibaba is the first female runner to complete an Olympics double after she trumped Turkey’s Elvan Abeylegesse and 2004 champion Meseret Defar for the title.
Tirunesh Dibaba was born on June 1, 1985 in Arsi, Ethiopia so her age is 23. She is both the indoor and outdoor 5000m record holder and also set the Olympic record for 10000m this time in Beijing.
Dibaba has two sisters and a brother, all of whom are track and field stars. After starting running at the age of 14, Tirunesh has been a consistent performer having set numerous records at the World Championships in 2003 and 2007. She became Ethiopia’s youngest ever female medalist at the age of 19, when she came third during the 5000m event during the 2004 Olympics.
Tirunesh set the 5000m world record during the Oslo Golden League in 2008. Her, a week old 10000m Olympic record is also the second fastest time of all-time.
