Track & Field events get underway on Friday in Beijing, and certainly one athlete to watch in the days ahead will be Sanya Richards, also known as the “speeding bullet”. She’ll have the support of her family and friends cheering her on in the stands, and hopefully this time she’ll win that individual gold medal she’s been after all these years. Good Luck, Sanya! We’re rooting for you!

As a biography, Sanya Richards was born on February 26, 1985 in Kingston, Jamaica. She is 23 years old. As far as her particulars, she stands 5 feet 8 and weighs 136 pounds. She moved to the United States when she was 12 years old, and became a citizen of the U.S. in May of 2002. She attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she excelled in basketball and track. This beautiful athlete has brains too, as she was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated from high school in 2002 with a 4.0 grade point average.

Sanya went on to the University of Texas at Austin, where she was the NCAA Outdoor champion in the 400m in 2003 and the NCAA Indoor champion in the 400m in 2004. She turned pro in June 2004, and signed a deal with Nike. Because of her pro status, she had to forgo her last two years of eligibility at the University of Texas. She graduated in 2006, receiving her degree in management information systems.

Sanya was part of the gold medal 4x400m relay team at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004.

In 2005, she took second place in the 400 meters while competing at the World Championships. In 2006, she was undefeated outdoors in the 400 meters and would win at the USA Indoor, USA Outdoor, World Athletics Final and World Cup events. She won the 2006 Jesse Owens Award as well. 2006 was a great yera for Sanya and it was that same year that she would meet her future husband, New York Giants cornerback Aaron Ross. At the time when they met, he played at the University of Texas. They will wed in 2009.

Sanya had a bit of a setback in 2007, when she was diagnosed with Behcet’s Syndrome, a vascular system disease which affects her with flu-like symptoms. This didn’t stop her from competing, and won the gold at the Worlds for her part in the 4x400m relay.
