Guo Jingjing is on her way to her second gold medal of the Beijing Games, as she attempts to become the first diver in history to have back to back gold in synchronized and individual diving in an Olympic Games.
She goes into Sunday’s final leading the pack with a score of 398.55, 15.05 points ahead of Russia’s Julia Pakhalina, and 53.25 points ahead of third place finisher Wu Minxia, her synchronized diving partner.
As a biography, Guo Jingjing was born on October 15, 1981 in Baoding, China. She is 26 years old. She has been diving since she was 6 years old. In 1992, she was chosen as a member of the Chinese National team. At age 14, Guo competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics and won a gold medal in the 3 meter synchronized springboard event with her partner, Wu Minxia. She won an individual gold medal in the 3 meter springboard as well.
She continued to win world championships as a synchronized and individual diver in the 3 meters and has become one of the most famous athletes in China. Because of her fame, she has been a constant subject of tabloid fodder. Tongues were wagging when she started dating Kenneth Fok, grandson of the late Hong Kong tycoon Henry Fok.
Guo came under fire after the Athens Olympics, because of her many endorsements and sponsorships, and fans felt this would affect her diving.
Guo plans on retiring after the Beijing Olympics.
