It was quite visible throughout the weekend that Tiger Woods was in pain, but at the final hole today of the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, he was all smiles after he sank a 12 foot birdie and forced a playoff with Rocco Mediate. See photos below.
Tiger had left knee surgery on April 15th, and obviously he isn’t 100% healed, but pushed through his pain and will walk another 18 holes Monday in the playoff.
Woods’ swing coach, Hank Haney, said that Tiger was obviously playing through a lot of pain, and that Woods’ medical personnel were reducing the swelling in his knee after each round. His knee would swell up again each time he went back out on the course.
Tiger, 32, is obviously the heavy favorite tomorrow over Rocco, who is 45. It’s the first U.S. Open playoff since Retief Goosen beat out Mark Brooks in 2001 at Southern Hills in Oklahoma.
The playoff is scheduled to begin Monday at 9:00 AM, PST and will be televised from 9:00 to 11:00 AM on ESPN, with NBC airing the final from 11:00 AM until its conclusion.
