Big Brown Triple Crown

June 5, 2008

Big Brown is on its way to becoming the Triple Crown winner, as it drew the No. 1 post in Belmont earlier today. See photos and video of Big Brown below.

If Big Brown wins at Belmont on Saturday, he will become the first Triple Crown winner in over 30 years. Affirmed was the last Triple Crown winner, winning back in 1978. Big Brown has a 2-5 odds of winning. The No. 1 post could prove lucky for Big Brown, as 23 winners before him started in that No. 1 post.

The most competition he has is from Casino Drive, whose odds are 7-2. The No. 5 post is where Casino Drive will start. Big Brown’s trainer, Rick Dutrow Jr., said confidently that Big Brown could win from any post spot, even with the little crack in Big Brown’s left front hoof.

“I just can’t see a post position getting him beat,” he said. “As long as we break good, I can see us getting a good trip. There is not a lot of speed in the race. If we need our horse early on, he’ll be there for us.”

The 140th running of Belmont Stakes will be televised Saturday on ESPN and ABC. Coverage will begin at Noon EDT on ESPN, and then will switch to ABC at 5:00 PM. The race starts at 6:25 PM.
