Dinara Safina is in the news today as she beat No.1 seed and fellow Russian Maria Sharapova earlier today at the French Open. 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5), 6-2. Dinara will play No. 7 Elena Dementieva next.

As a biography, Dinara Safina was born on April 27, 1986 in Moscow, Russia. She is 22 years old. She comes from a tennis family – her mother used to train her as a child, her father is the Director of Spartak Tennis Club in Moscow, and her brother, Marat Safin, is a former No. 1 seed tennis player.

Dinara turned pro in 2001. She reached the 3rd round of the Australian Open in 2004 and 2007. In the French Open, she reached the quarterfinals in 2006 and in 2008. She made it to the third round of Wimbledon in 2005 and 2006 and made the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in 2006. Her highest ranking has been at No. 9 in May 2007.

When Dinara is not on the court, she loves to eat Russian, Japanese and Italian food and enjoys going to the movies, reading and listening to music.
