May 30, 2008

Meet Katarina Srebotnik, a Slovenian tennis player. See photos, video and a biography of Katarina below.

In a shocker at the French Open Friday, Katarina Srebotnik beat Serena Williams, 6-4, 6-4 in the third round. Serena clearly wasn’t herself, and Katarina took advantage of it. Katarina said after the match:

“Today I woke up and it was just another opportunity,” Srebotnik said. “This is what you work so hard for — to be in third round where you play Serena or someone like that and you have really nothing to lose.”

As a biography, Katarina Srebotnik was born on March 12, 1981 in Slovenj Gradec, Yugoslavia, which is now Slovenia. She is 27 years old.

As a junior, Katarina won the 1998 Wimbledon title and was a runner up at the U.S. Open that same year.

Katarina has been quite successful in Doubles, reaching the semi final of the Australian Open in 2006, getting to the finals at the French Open and Wimbledon in 2007, and the final at the US Open in 2006.

In Mixed Doubles, she has three grand slam wins under belt – the 1999 French Open, the 2003 US Open, and the 2006 French Open.

In singles, she reached the 3rd round of the Australian Open in 2003 and 2008, the 4th round of the French Open in 2002, the third round of Wimbledon in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and the 3rd round of the US Open in 2006.
