British Olympic Heptathlete Kelly Sotherton has been out of training for the past couple of weeks because of kidney problems, but she’s back to health and back to training for the Beijing Olympics. Now that defending champion Carolina Kluft of Sweden says she won’t be competing in Beijing, the field is wide open and people are looking to Sotherton with hopes for gold.

In the midst of her preparations for the Olympics, Sotherton has agreed to do a risque photo shoot. The photos won’t come out until this summer so we’ll have to wait to see them. Meanwhile, Sotherton is teasing her fans by saying that the sports photo shoot is ‘risky’ and that she won’t be wearing much. Snap! That gets your attention!

Kelly Jade Sotherton was born on November 13, 1976 in Newport, Isle of Wight, United Kingdom. She was raised on the Isle of Wight by her mother Yvonne who was a single parent.

Sotherton started her athletic career when she was about 14 years old. When she was a teenager she played for Hampshire Netball team. She won two school championships in the heptathlon. She also did swimming and hockey. Her events are 200-meters, 800-meter hurdles, shot put, javelin, long jump and high jump.

She didn’t break into athletics professionally until she was 25 years old in 2002 when she changed coaches and began improving her focus and performance. She credits the new coach, Charles Van Commenee, with her ability to start achieving a champion level athletic career. Sotherton brought home a Bronze metal in the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics. In 2006 she won the Gold at the Commonwealth Games. At this point she is one of the most famous British athletes and is considered the number one British Heptathlete.
