Kelly Jade Sotherton was born on November 13, 1976 in Newport, Isle of Wight, United Kingdom. She was raised on the Isle of Wight by her mother Yvonne who was a single parent.
Sotherton started her athletic career when she was about 14 years old. When she was a teenager she played for Hampshire Netball team. She won two school championships in the heptathlon. She also did swimming and hockey. Her events are 200-meters, 800-meter hurdles, shot put, javelin, long jump and high jump.
