No. 1 player Lorena Ochoa will not play at the Ginn Tribute Hosted by Annika Sorenstam. She withdraws from the event due to her uncle’s ill health.
Lorena’s withdrawal from the Ginn Tribute prevents us from seeing tournament host Annika Sorenstam and Lorena battle it out on the fairway. Lorena was on her way to Mexico on Tuesday, and said in a brief statement:
“I am very sorry to have to withdraw,” Ochoa said. “I need to be with my uncle and my family right now.”
Annika sent best wishes to Lorena and her family.
“She is a tremendous ambassador for our game, and we will miss her this week,” Sorenstam said. “That being said, family comes first and I know she has a very close family. I respect and support her decision and wish them the best.”
Lorena was fined $25,000 by the LPGA after she did not compete in the Corning Classic last week. LPGA rules require that a player must compete in each event once in a four year cycle. Lorena will still compete at the McDonald’s LPGA Championship in Maryland next week.
