During the TNT pre-game show before the San Antonio/New Orleans deciding Game 7, Charles Barkley sat down with Ernie Johnson and discussed his gambling problem. See the video below.
Ernie Johnson told Barkley, “Charles, we need to talk.” Sir Charles went on to explain the $400,000 gambling debt to The Wynn Las Vegas Casino and Resort.
“I screwed up and didn’t pay them in a significant amount of time. Could they have handled it differently? Yes. But it was my fault.”
The Wynn filed a complaint against Barkley last Wednesday after he did not pay four $100,000 casino markers, which he received on October 18 and 19. He did repay the debt and thanked his fans for being so supportive.
Barkley has always been open about his gambling, revealing in a May 2006 interview that he has probably gambled an estimated $10 million over the years. According to Barkley, he’s always had the money to lose, but admits now that he needs a break.
“I like to go into Vegas, it’s a fun place, but you know what, I’ve got to stop gambling. That’s the bottom line. I am not going to gamble anymore. For right now, the next year or two, I’m not going to gamble.”
Barkley thinks he can quit his gambling habit without seeking professional help.
