Just two days after her Michelob Ultra Open win on Sunday, Annika Sorenstam has announced that she will retire at the end of the season. See a tribute to Annika in photos and video below.
Annika is going out “on her own terms“. She said:
“After much consideration, I have made the decision to step away from competitive golf at the end of this season. Because I love the game so much, this is obviously a hard decision to make, but it feels like the right one. I made this decision because I have a number of other priorities in my life, including starting a family, that I want to be as dedicated to as I have been to playing golf and it was always important to me to go out on my own terms.”
These last few years, Annika has hinted that she wanted to walk away from the sport, even pushing her wedding back to fiance Mike McGee to April 2009 in the hopes of catching up to #1 Lorena Ochoa. At the end of the 2007 season she felt she was at “the back nine of my career”.
37-year-old Sorenstam, who turned pro in 1992, is looking forward to starting a family and growing her businesses. She has her own golf academy – Annika Academy at Ginn Reunion Resort (see video below) which opened in April 2007, has designed several golf courses, has a clothing line and with her passion for cooking, may even enroll in cooking school.
Annika, the beautiful Swede who makes her home in Orlando, Florida, is one of the most successful female golfers in the history of the sport and has amassed winnings of over $22 million, at the top of the list for LPGA career earnings. She will be dearly missed on the LPGA circuit.
