Sean Avery: Injured With Lacerated Spleen

April 30, 2008

Sean Avery is out for the rest of the playoffs after being hospitalized last night for a lacerated spleen, an injury he reeived during last night’s loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

After last night’s game, Avery told team physician Dr. Andrew Feldman that his pain had gotten worse throughout the night and together they went from Madison Square Garden to St. Vincent’s Medical Center. A CT scan was done and doctors had found that he had a lacerated spleen. His spleen did not need to be removed. It is unclear at what point during last night’s game did Avery suffer his injury but Avery’s mother, Marlene, spoke with the Toronto Sun and said that it happened in the first period after Sean’s collision with a Penguins defenseman. She mentioned that he had played the rest of the game in “a great deal of pain“. She went on to add that the spleen did not rupture, but he did suffer from some internal bleeding.

Earlier this morning, The New York Daily News reported that Avery was rushed to the hospital unconscious and was suffering from cardiac arrest. Not quite sure where the paper got that info…Hmmm, do you think Elisha Cuthbert will visit him in the hospital???
