Meet Kelli Pedroia, wife of Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia. See photos and a biography of Kelli below.
Kelli Pedroia is in the news today as she brings a warning and the dangers to all teens of tanning in the sun and tanning booths, especially during prom season. Kelli was diagnosed with stage two melanoma when she was 18 years old. Kelli now is the volunteer spokeswoman for the Melanoma Foundation of New England.
As a biography, Kelli Pedroia (formerly Kelli Hatley) grew up in the Chicago area. Kelli spent many a spring break and summers in the sun, and at the age of 18, she noticed a red, asymmetrical mole on her right thigh upon her return from a Cayman Islands spring break trip. She went to the doctor and had the mole removed, but was shocked when lab results showed that she had stage two melanoma. She went on to have lymph nodes removed from her leg and has had moles removed from her clavicle and her breast.
Kelli, who is now 24, admittedly said that right before her November 11, 2006 wedding to Dustin she went to the tanning booth. It wasn’t until she and Dustin were approached last year to take part in MLB’s melanoma awareness campaign that she became serious about her bout with cancer. She stopped going to the tanning booths last May and is now a spokeswoman for the Melanoma Foundation of New England.
Kelli is a 2005 graduate of Arizona State University, where she and Dustin met.
