Martina Navratilova & Donald Driver Join Dancing With The Stars

February 28, 2012

There’s a new crop of celebrities that have signed up to join Season 14 of “Dancing With The Stars”, and this time around we have a couple athletes who will compete for the coveted mirror ball trophy. Tennis great Martina Navratilova and Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver both have athletic prowess, but what are their skills like on the dance floor?

This morning, Tom Bergeron appeared on “Good Morning America” and announced the newest group of celebs who will don some dancing shoes and show us if they have what it takes to eventually hoist that mirror ball trophy up in the air. In addition to Navratilova and Driver, the other contestants include Melissa Gilbert, Jack Wagner, Jaleel White, William Levy, Gladys Knight, Katherine Jenkins, Sherri Shepherd, Roshon Fegan, Maria Menounos and Gavin DeGraw.

Driver is the latest NFL star to join the DWTS cast. Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward won the championship in Season 12 and Emmitt Smith won back in Season 3. So who knows, he might be the third NFL player to nab a win. Other NFLers who have hoofed it up on the dance floor include Lawrence Taylor, Jerry Rice and Chad Ochocinco.

Martina Navratilova is only the second tennis player to have competed on the show. Monica Seles appeared in Season 6, but was eliminated in the second week. She obviously didn’t do very well on the dance floor, so here’s hoping that Martina goes further than Seles did.

Navratilova appears motivated to lace up those dancing shoes, saying, “I like to conquer my phobia. I was afraid of heights. I got a pilot’s license. My biggest fear was to drown, so I got a SCUBA-diving license,” she says. “I get embarrassed dancing by myself, so I figured why not do it in front of millions of people.”

Good luck to both Martina and Donald this season! We here at Right Fielders will be rooting for you!
