Happy Birthday, John McEnroe! The tennis star is 53 years old today. Don’t you miss watching his tirades on the court? I grew up watching the short tempered former No. 1 during his heyday, and there’s no one quite like the “superbrat”. What’s the latest with Johnny Mac?
Not only was McEnroe making headlines because of what he was doing on the court, his personal life was splattered all over the papers as well. He and Tatum O’Neal began dating and subsequently married in August of 1986. Together they had three children, Kevin, Sean and Emily. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1994. McEnroe has been married to rocker Patty Smyth since 1997 and together they have two daughters, Anna and Ava. Smyth has a daughter Ruby, from a previous marriage.
Since retiring back in 1992, we continually see McEnroe as an Analyst for many tennis tournaments and he has been seen playing on the ATP Champions Tour. He opened the John McEnroe Tennis Academy in New York City two years ago, and might we see one of his students break out as the new tennis star to watch? It looks like a couple of the kids are well on their way.
McEnroe has been named the Spokesman for Tennis Night in America 2012. This year’s BNP Paribas Showdown at Madison Square Garden on March 5th will showcase Roger Federer vs. Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova vs. Caroline Wozniacki. What an awesome night of tennis that will be!
“The continued promotion of junior tennis across America is key to the future of our sport. With the new 10 and Under rules now in effect, there is no better time that I can think of to get kids involved in tennis. Tennis Night in America brings focus to all of this so I am excited to be a part of it.”
Happy Birthday, John McEnroe! Hope it’s the best one yet!
