A very Happy Birthday goes out to Muhammad Ali! The boxing legend turns 70 years old today. On Saturday, hundreds came out to celebrate the milestone birthday with him.
The party, which was an invitation only event at $1000 per person, also served as a fundraiser for the Ali Center. Several celebrities were on hand for the festivities, along with the countless many whose lives were touched by “the Louisville Lip”.
Former boxer Lennox Lewis attended the party and said, “I feel so proud and honored that we’re able to show our feelings and show our support for him. What he’s done outside the ring — just the bravery, the poise, the feeling, the sacrifice. He’s truly a great man.”
Also in attendance were Sarah Shourd, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal. Do their names ring a bell? They were the American hikers who were imprisoned in Iran and it was Ali who had campaigned for their release.
Ali’s career spanned 30 years, which boasts a professional record of 56 wins and 5 losses. His most memorable fights included the “Rumble in the Jungle” in 1974, where he beat George Foreman to win the WBC and WBA World Heavyweight titles. A year later he met the late Joe Frazier for the third time in the ring, this time meeting in the Philippines. The fight was dubbed “The Thrilla in Manila”, where he won by TKO.
Ali would retire from boxing in 1981 and three years later was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.
What did the former boxer have to say about turning 70? His wife Lonnie said, “He’s glad he’s here to turn 70, but he wants to be reassured he doesn’t look 70.” Birthday celebrations will continue over the next few months, with parties being held in California, Las Vegas and Phoenix, where he currently lives. Party on, Mr. Ali! That’s the way to celebrate turning 70!
Happy happy birthday, Muhammad Ali! Hope it’s the best one yet!
