Lindsey Vonn and her husband Thomas Vonn are divorcing. The Olympic gold medalist confirmed the news Sunday night that she and Thomas, who were married for four years, have split.
In a statement to the AP, Vonn said:
“It is with great sadness that I announce that Thomas and I have begun divorce proceedings. This is an extremely difficult time in my personal life, and I hope the media and my fans can respect my need for privacy on this matter. I will continue to be coached by the US ski team and look forward to competing the rest of the season.”
Thomas, a former Olympic skier as well, proposed to Lindsey on New Year’s Day 2007 in Kirchberg, Austria. Almost 9 months later they were wed at Silver Lake Lodge in Deer Valley, Utah on September 29. They had lived together four years prior to getting married.
It’s been widely known that Vonn and her father have been estranged for several years now, in part because of her relationship with Thomas. He wasn’t invited to their wedding and it was Lindsey’s paternal grandfather who walked her down the aisle. In an interview with the New York Times last year, Alan Kildow said, “I was concerned over the fact that a teenage girl was dating a man nine years older than she was. But as time goes on, you have to accept it. When one’s daughter chooses a husband, you need to accept him into the family, and we have.” Now that Lindsey and Thomas have parted ways, will this open the door for a reconciliation between Lindsey and her father? Only time will tell.
Thomas reportedly filed for divorce last Monday. It is unclear if he will remain as Lindsey’s ‘chief adviser’. They had no children.
