Heidi Watney: NESN Red Sox Reporter

April 23, 2008

Meet Heidi Watney, a former beauty queen and NESN’s newest Red Sox sideline reporter. See photos, video and a biography of Heidi below.

It was announced today that Heidi Watney has been hired by NESN as the new sideline reporter (replacing Tina Cervasio) and will join announcers Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy during the Red Sox broadcasts.

As a biography, Heidi Watney is a former beauty queen, having been a Miss San Diego and a Miss California contestant four times, and a former model. She most recently was the sports reporter for Fresno’s Fox affiliate KMPH. It is unclear if Watney was fired from her position at KMPH or if she quit, but she did have an incident at a Fresno High School where she used inappropriate language and was suspended from the station. She also had a run-in with Bill Murray back in 2005 when Watney was covering the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am golf tournament. She asked Murray if he would tape a promotional spot for Kopi Sotiropulos, the station’s meteorologist, to which Murray said, “Kopi is a loser. This is so boring. You’re such an amateur. These blondes think they own the world. You can take the girl out of Fresno, but you can’t take Fresno out of the girl.” Ouch!

Will the former beauty queen and California transplant be able to cut it as a Red Sox reporter? Only time will tell…

Heidi- I’m a 65 year old retited elementary school teacher and a life long Red Sox fan ( was a season ticket holder in the 60s). I moved to Florida in ’76 from R.I.and am a local fan of The Lightning(NHL) and Bucs(NFL). I’m a regular poster on the St. Pete Times’s blogs I’m known as “Coach Bill”.
My thought: When you’re here on August 4th & 5th, an interesting color shoot would be the crowd chanting “Go Home Red Sox!” ( which they allways do)and my grandson and I (age 9 and very cute) wearing our Lightning and Bucs jerseys holing a sign that says ” Go Home Red Sox ?” (flip sign) “We ARE Home!” ( Off would come the jerseys and we would be in our Red Sox shirts and the crowd would chant ” Let’s Go Red Sox ” I could supply a few off camera chanters to help.
I used to produce a TV show with children in elementary school and I’m well-versed in directing techniques. I also speak well should you want a follow up ( of what it’s like to be a Red Sox Nation member 1000 miles away).
If you think this could be interesting, I’ll be at the game Aug 4th with adult friends and we could discuss it. I’ll bring my daughter and grandson on Aug 5th and could make some appropriate signs.
My cell is xxxxxxxxxx God bless you, Heidi. You’re great! Would appreciate an RS Thank You

Heidi- My wife just came in and said “Who are you writing to in pink?” I told her it was you ( We have the MLB package and watch all games) She immediately began editing my note. As I said, I speak well. ‘Don’t always spell that well when hurrying. I’m retired not retited. Sorry about that!
