Born in Oklahoma 56 years ago, Lee Roy Selmon, a former defensive end in the NFL played with the University of Oklahoma where his brothers Dewey and Lucious also played, the three of them all defensive ends and by far the scariest, most popular football brothers in Oklahoma, they also are 3 of the six children Lucious Sr. and Jessie Selmon had.

Selmon was the first pick during the 1976 NFL Draft, he became the Buccaneers’ #63 player until the day of his retirement in 1984 due to a back injury (herniated disc ), Tampa retired his number two years later and two years after that he was inducted in the College Football Hall Of Fame.

His health forced him to leave his position as an athletic director at the University of South Florida, a few years after he became president of the USF Foundation Partnership, in 1995 he was inducted in the Pro Football Hall Of Fame, Bucs’ Krewe of Honor in 1991, University of Oklahoma Hall of Fame, and Tampa Sports Hall of Fame. His restaurant, Lee Roy Selmon’s Restaurant, opened its doors in 2000.

When we first heard the news about Lee Roy Selmon’s stroke, we couldn’t help to hear the worst coming, but as informed by his brother Lucious his condition was getting better. He had been treated at St. Joseph’s Hospital after his stroke on September 2nd. He was breathing on his own, recognized his family’s faces, squeezed their hands and hopefully we would hear he was fully recovered.

His beloved wife Claybra Selmon (nee. Fields) has been by his side throughout his achievements even before they got married 34 years ago. Also by his side were his children, their eldest and only daughter Brandy, son Roy Jr, and their youngest Chris.

However, as Mr. Selmon was recovering on Sunday, September 4th, terrible news struck us all, Lee Roy Selmon died at Tampa Hospital surrounded by his family. His wife Claybra released the following statement..

“For all his accomplishments on and off the field, to us Lee Roy was the rock of our family. This has been a sudden and shocking event and we are devastated by this unexpected loss.”

He will be remembered as one of the best NFL players of all times, a great man, friend, son, brother, loving husband and caring father and all the amazing things Lee Roy Selmon is in everyone’s hearts. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, children, the rest of his family, friends, and fans throughout this terrible time.
