Wimbledon has a new female champion, her name is Petra Kvitova and she just happened to be the young Czech player who beat Russian Maia Sharapova. Keep reading to know more about this match and why not a little about this new champion all in the story below where you will also find the exciting moment when Petra won in the video after the jump!!
Many said the young Chez defeated the screaming Russian, I think Petra’s performance at Wimbledon stunned many, she did have great matches and proved she was there to take it all. Petra, a left handed player, defeated Maria Sharapova in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in an impressive hour and 30 minutes. Maria, who has done amazingly well considering she had shoulder surgery in October 2008. It was sad to see her taking her runner-up trophy but that is the way things had to be and today it was all about the 21 year-old who has had an amazing 2011 season so far.
This year she began earning titles by defeating Andrea Petkovic at the Brisbane International, followed by her Australian Open win over Kim Clijsters and the Mutua Madrid Open. Wimbledon is her first Grand Slam, the first of many perhaps?? And I think that if you asked her what was the second best thing about winning Wimbledon was, probably Martina Navratilova, another left handed and her idol since her early beginnings in tennis, whom she got a chance to meet in person.
Petra, born 21 years ago in the small Czechoslovakian town of Bilovec (home of another tennis player Kveta Peschke) with an area of 15 square miles and a population of a little more than 7,500 citizens. She is the youngest child and only girl of Jiri and Pavla, her older brothers are Jiri and Libor, her family resides now in Fulnek but today these proud parents were cheering for their beloved daughter.
Congratulations to Petra Kvitova, the new 2011 Wimbledon champion!!!! Watch the moment when she took this title and feel free to send her a message!!!
