Will Maria Sharapova Win Her Second Wimbledon Title?

June 30, 2011

Fifth seed Maria Sharapova beat Germany’s Sabine Lisicki today, 6-4, 6-3 at Wimbledon, giving the Russian a chance at winning her second Wimby title. She will face Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, who beat Belarus player Victoria Azarenka, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. It’s good to see Sharapova in a Grand Slam final again, we haven’t seen her in one since 2008. Network executives are undoubtedly rejoicing! Will she hoist a second Wimbledon silver plate up in the air or will she choke?

At a post match news conference, Sharapova voiced her excitement of making the finals again.

“I’m thrilled to be in the final. I was pretty realistic. I hadn’t been past the fourth round in a few years. So to be at this stage, I’m just thrilled to have the opportunity to go for it.”

Let’s backtrack a little and take a look at who she beat out on her way to the final set for Saturday.

*First round: vs. Anna Chakvetadze (Russia) 6-2, 6-1
*Second round: vs. Laura Robson (Great Britain) 7–6(4), 6–3
*Third round: vs. Klara Zakopalova (Czech Republic) 6-2, 6-3
*Fourth round: vs. Shuai Peng (China) 6-4, 6-2
*Fifth round: vs. Dominika Cibulkova (Slovakia) 6-1, 6-1
*Semi-finals: vs. Sabine Lisicki (Germany) 6-4, 6-3

I’m betting my money on Sharapova for the win this weekend. Experience, folks. Three Grand Slam titles – Wimbledon in 2004, US Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008, compared to Kvitova, who will be competing in her very first title match of her career. It’s a bit of a no brainer here, and hopefully Sharapova doesn’t go into this match over-confident and ends up choking.

The blonde beauty is due for a Grand Slam win, coming close earlier this month at the French Open, only to lose in the semi-finals to Li Na, who would go on to win.

Sharapova’s fiance, New Jersey Nets player Sasha Vujacic has proven to be her good luck charm. He has been accompanying her to tourneys since his NBA season wrapped up and saw her make the semi-finals at the French Open and now the final at Wimbledon. He just might be able to see her hoist that silver plate at center court on Saturday.

Good luck, Maria, I will be rooting for you!!
