Hulk Hogan’s ex-wife Linda appeared on Today this week where she made some very serious claims of spousal abuse against her former man. Is it a publicity play, or the real deal?
It’s always difficult to know whether or not you can believe the outrageous claims made by someone who is plugging a tell-all book. It would be naïve to instantly write them off as false, but equally foolish not to question their motives.
Fans of the greatest wrestler to ever live are being faced with that exact conundrum today.
In a sit down with Matt Lauer, Linda spilled her guts about what 25 years by Hulk’s side were like. Among the most disturbing quotes were the claims that he would abuse painkillers, and that she often feared for her life:
“… He threw lamps. He held me down on the bed with his hands around my throat during arguments, slamming doors, pounding walls. I was always afraid he would kill me in one of his rages.”
Hogan lives in the Tampa Bay Area, and is close with controversial radio host Bubba The Love Sponge, who has connections with many former and current wrestlers. Not surprisingly, the Hulkster called into Bubba’s show to offer a retort.
Naturally, he claims that she is simply trying to ride on his coattails for money, even after their divorce. He called her “delusional” and said he doesn’t even feel the need to defend himself against her because she is a “non-issue.”
This one is hard for me. Just like Hogan, I grew up in Tampa. Heck, he is one of my first real heroes. His character in the ring was that of a “real American” who “fights for what’s right.”
Could my childhood hero be a closet woman-beater? Say it ain’t so.
Who do you believe?
