This 32 year old defensive midfielder stated his career with Mexico’s Atlas, (1996-1999) he later signed with Monaco and left on 2003 when he became part of Barca’ squad, he signed a 4 year deal worth €38.5 million, he resigned on 2009 and would be part of the team until 2012 however the following year he was released. After the Spanish giant and UEFA Champions League champ released him it was rumored many teams showed interest in the Mexican star but at the end it was the MLS team The New York Red Bulls that signed him in, in NY Rafa reunited with his former Barca teammate Thierry Henry.
As for Wilfred Velasquez he is the #9 player at the Guatemala National Soccer team, this 26 year-old midfielder has been part of the Chapin team that participated at the Asian Cup, Copa CentroAmericana 2011 where I got the chance to see him in person, LOL!! and I saw him again at the International friendly matches Guatemala played in Latin America last season.
At the Gold Cup Wilfred has started in four games, made one assist and became the guy who received a yellow card at their game vs. Mexico on June 18, where they also loss to los Tapatios 2-1, in case you don’t understand Tapatios is a commonly known word in Spanish used to refer to Mexicans, seriously guys let’s Spanish it up a notch!
Anyways Wilfred was the guy who did an awful tackle on Marquez during the second half of the match on Saturday, he got a yellow card and got scolded by Chicharito who told him, Parale! Take it easy!
I have to tell you by looking at the video I expected the referee to send Velasquez off the game, he deserved a red card, no doubt about that, what do you think? Luckily, he was not seriously injured and even he expressed his relief after such tackle.
“It was a dangerous tackle, luckily nothing serious happened. I feel OK.”
