Is there a world in the NBA without Shaq? We are about to find out as former Miami Heat player Shaquille O’Neal announced his retirement to his fans and friends via Twitter. Are we shocked? I think some of you probably are, but I am pretty sure some others were expecting this, let’s just hope this doesn’t turn out to be one of those Brett Favre’s “I am retiring, maybe I’m not, or maybe I am and I am not retiring after all” moment, because I don’t think I can handle that, can you?
39 year-old Shaquille O’Neal announced today he is retiring from basketball after 19 seasons and 4 NBA rings. He is ready to say goodbye to the court and what will he be doing instead? He wouldn’t say but he did invite the media to a press conference held at his house this Friday at 1:00 p.m where many questions would be answered about his decision and probably about his future plans.
This is the video Shaq posted and where in a few words he announced his departure.
“We did it. Nineteen years baby. I want to thank you very much, that’s why I’m telling you first, I’m about to retire. Love you, talk to you soon.”
Looking back in time and into the amazing career of Shaq in the NBA, we go to 1992 when he was a 20-year-old college student at LSU and Orlando Magic’s newest addition, a year later he was named the Rookie of the Year and All-Rookie First Team. He left Orlando in 1996 and signed with the Lakers, with them he enjoyed his first three NBA championships. He later signed with the Heat in 2004, won his fourth NBA Championship in 2004 and became a Phoenix Suns player four years after that. The following year in 2009 he landed in Cleveland where he stayed until last year when he joined the Boston Celtics.
In this video below he spoke to Sports Center and as we told you before he didn’t say much about his retirement. He did say what he is going to miss the most.
“I’m going to miss the competition. I’m going to miss, you know, the chase for the ring. You know, I’m actually going to miss everything.”
And I wonder what will you miss the most about Shaquille O’Neal? Do you think this is not goodbye but see you later when I change my mind about my retirement?
