Gabrielle Reece made a name for herself as a model and then as a champion beach volleyball player. She originally came on to national attention when she was named one of the five most beautiful women in the world in 1989 by Elle magazine. She is 6′ 3″ of toned muscle. She has the enviable combination of brains, beauty and athletic ability. She married legendary extreme surfer, 43-year-old Laird Hamilton in November 1997. The couple have two children. Reece Viola Hamilton is 4-years-old and Brody Jo Hamilton was born on January 1, 2008. Hamilton has a 12-year-old daughter by his first marriage.
Gabrielle Reece was born January 6, 1970 on the island of Trinidad of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Her parents divorced when she was two-years-old and her mother left her with friends in New York City (Long Island) so that she could go to Mexico and pursue a career training dolphins. Gabrielle’s father was killed in a plane crash when she was 5-years-old. Her mother sent for her when she was 7-years-old to come and live with her and her new husband in Puerto Rico. From that point on, Gabrielle lived on the islands with her mother who divorced her step-father in 1984. She primarily lived on the Virgin Islands.
Gabrielle didn’t start sports until she was 14-years-old but excelled once she started. She was offered a scholarship to play volleyball at Florida State University. She began her modeling career in 1988 during her first year at Florida State. She spent half her year in New York modeling and the other half in Florida going to school. She earned a bachelors degree in communications.
She started her professional volleyball career in 1992 when she completed college. She has retired from volleyball but continues to play golf. She has launched a fitness and health business and shot two DVDs on staying fit while pregnant.
Over the years Gabrielle has been named among the sexiest women in sports by numerous publications. She has graced the covers of numerous magazines including Playboy, Harper’s Bazaar, LIFE and Women’s Sports & Fitness. She was the first female cross-training spokesperson for Nike. She has worked as a commentator on various sports programs. She has written health columns for Elle magazine and is a regular contributor to Women’s Sports & Fitness magazine.
