The Austrian Judo Olympic silver medalist Claudia Heill committed suicide at age 29 when she jumped off a window, the tragic news of her death has shocked the entire world of Judo and sports overall. Continue reading our story to know more about this terrible news and her life.
Claudia was born in Vienna, she just turned 29 years old on January 24th. Most people remember the moment she captured the silver medal during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and 4 years later in Japan she finished fifth, while others remember her when she won the silver at the European Championships in 2001 (France) and again in 2005 (Netherlands), bronze at the 2002, 2003 and 2007 European Judo Championships, winner at the 2006 Military World Championships, she placed fifth at the 2001 World Championships, 7th in 2007 and the World Junior Championships in 1998. Her childhood coach Hubert Rohrauer left her in 2008 when he joined the Israeli Judo Federation. The next year in 2009 Claudia announced her retirement due to lack of motivation and her desire to become a judo coach. Right after she went to University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt, yes, Ms. Heill was an amazing athlete and coach, but she also was the person whose happiness would contaminate people around her, she was a funny, kind, smart and beautiful young woman, she will be truly missed.
The news of her suicide hit us today and the The Austrian judo federation hurried to release their condolences to her family and a statement about Claudia.
“Nobody could foresee this act of desperation. Claudia was a happy person, visionary, dedicated her life to judo. Our sympathy goes to her family -… Austria’s judo has suffered a great loss. Everyone who knew her is devastated.” Said Hans Paul Kutschera the Aussie Judo Federation President
So far reports claim Claudia jumped off a six story window in her home in Vienna, no foul play is suspected, no note was found either. More details about her suicide will be provided as this story develops.
