Mr. Martin was one of Buffalo Sabres/ biggest and most famous players, his death at 59 years old has shattered the hearts of Canadians and sports fans all over.

Shocking news when just less than a month ago the Sabres’ famed French Connection member reunited with fellow players Rene Robert and Gilbert Perreault, who along with team owner Terry Pegula waved to fans in the middle of the rink before their game against Atlanta. All of them wore their jerseys, Rick looked amazing with his number 7 on it, for sure that memory will stay in our minds forever.

Richard Lionel Martin was born on July 26, 1951 in Verdun, Quebec in Canada. As a teenager he started playing for the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft until he signed with the Buffalo Sabres after he was picked during the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft. He left Buffalo in 1980 when he played with Los Angeles Kings until his retirement two years later. Along with his lovely wife Mikey he owned a restaurant in Buffalo where he also resided in Akron with their sons Josh and Corey Martin.

According to Buffalo police and witnesses he was driving his truck with his dog on the main street in Clarence, a suburb in Buffalo, but apparently he suffered some kind of emergency (believed to be a heart attack), it’s unclear what caused his eyes to close and head to slump over when he crashed at 12:15. His car rolled over and came to a stop with a pole. CPR was given to him before he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, an autopsy will reveal his cause of death at 1:00 p.m.

Sabres players and fans gave Martin a sanding ovation followed by the minute of silence before the game against the Ottawa Senators.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Mikey Martin, her sons, the rest of his family, friends and fans throughout this terrible time. Would you like to send your condolences to Rick Martin’s wife Mikey and her family?

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Rick. i cried for a long time. The old time Sabres were my favourite team. Rick was my favourite player in the entire league. I attended an old alumni game back in the late 90′s between the Sabres and the senators. I forget who won. But Rick played and so did Rene Robert and others. Rick looked like he never lost his touch. Also, Rick’s uncle Charlie and my father are cousins! May God keep you and your family during these difficult days. P.S. I live in Ottawa, and would like to know at the earliest convenience, if or when there will be a traditional funeral, I understand that there will be a memorial next Thursday at the arena. My e-mail is cars@david.ca. thank you.

He owned a IT company, not a restaurant.
