Those of us that watched this year’s Super Bowl saw that even professional singers can flub the words to the Star Spangled Banner. But it got me to thinking, who are the worst national anthem signers in television history? Find out my worst-of-the-worst selection below!
From celebrities who forget the words to amateurs who really think they can sing, the nation’s song has been butchered countless times in our rich sporting history. Still, it’s a rare treat to hear the song screamed in quite the horrific fashion that Rosanne Barr did.
Even going so far as to spit on the ground after butchering our nation’s song, it’s no wonder she was booed off stage in this video:
Okay, fair enough, she was probably trying to sing badly. But, tragically, this next guy really thought he could hold a tune! Once most famous for being the fastest man in the world, Carl Lewis gained a whole new kind of infamy with his rendition of the National Anthem at a 90’s NBA game. It’s bad enough that he kicks things off with the longest “OOOOOOOO” since that Oklahoma song, but then it’s downhill from there.
Of all American professions, a rare few are more down-home patriotic than serving in law enforcement. So, it might be a reasonable assumption to say that any police man could tell you the words to the national anthem, right? Don’t bet on it! This Chattanooga Police Man’s take on the anthem has earned him top-spot in the ranks of YouTube.
You know it’s bad when you’re fellow officers are stifling laughs! There have been so manyother flops with this song including R. Kelly’s Star Spangled Remix at an NBA game, Michael Bolton reading the words off of his hand mid-song, and the indescribable rendition by Cuba Gooding Sr., but here’s one where a bad memory and even worse luck landed one young lady in some hot water at a hockey game.
What do you think of my list of the worst national anthem singers? Is it worse to try to over-sing, or to forget the words? Give me your thoughts, and any performances you want to add in the comment section! For now, I’ll leave you with this Sports Center top 10, because let’s face it, they always get it right.
