Ryan Hawks was a spectacular and amazing freeskier, but a tragic accident ended his promising career too soon. He died from injuries suffered in a crash at the North American Freeskiing Championships in Kirkwood, California. He was 25 years old. Follow us in our story to learn more about the short life of this professional freeskier in his biography below, amaze yourself by his talent from the photos and videos after the jump.
25 year old Ryan Hawks was born in Vermont in 1985, grew up in Sugarbush, Mad River Glen. He started skiing at a very young age, as a matter of fact he was just two yeas old.
After high school he decided to go to the University of Vermont where he would ski during the winter and study engineering during the fall and summer. What made him so amazing was his versatility, kindness and happy spirit. Check out Ryan Hawks’ picture here and also here.
He recently signed a deal with Blizzard/Technica pro team and spent the season living in his van that they called ski chalet on wheels, with fellow skiers Lars Chickering-Ayers and brother Silas who are also, along with Hawks, part of Vermont Skiers Green Mountain Freeride.
Hawks was competing at the North American Freeskiing Championships in Kirkwood, California where on Sunday he did a back-flip off a cliff (50 to 70 feet), nothing he couldn’t manage. He had trained very hard for this competition, landed on his feet but crumbled afterwards, landing on hard snow. He was immediately rushed to the Renown Health Center in Reno via helicopter. At the hospital he was treated with a lacerated kidney, collapsed lung, head injury, pelvis and vertebrae fracture. His condition was stable later that day, but internal bleeding caused his death the morning after. Ryan you will be missed!
