Oprah’s vaunted Michael Vick interview has been canceled by the NFL comeback player of the year. After jumping through a few hoops to land the much-sought QB for the final season of her talk-show, the NFL star had to cancel at the last second, without giving a reason. So was the Queen of Talk snubbed? The Eagles’ QB has publicly declared himself a fan of the philanthropic talk-show host, so it seems unlikely that he’s just giving her the cold shoulder.
“After careful consideration, I will need to postpone the taping of the Oprah Winfrey interview scheduled for February 22. I admire and respect Oprah and hope to be able to participate in an interview in the future,” the QB said in a statement, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
For Oprah, the Vick interview being canceled isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s a lot of wasted work. British talk-show host Piers Morgan originally made a bet with her that she couldn’t land a talk with the Eagles QB for her show. The two wagered £200 (about $320) while talking on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight.” But the Queen of Talk quickly nixed the bet via Twitter when she was contacted by the QB’s agent, saying that his client could not agree to an interview while the bet was on because that would be colluding with gambling.
“Dear Piers, I’m withdrawing the bet, I don’t know why I let you talk me into it, I still love you, Oprah,” she tweeted after the call.
Morgan, therefore, didn’t technically lose the bet, but says he should have known better than to take on the Queen of Talk.
“The moment I saw that, I knew what that meant was, if she did that on Twitter, she was in the clear and she had him in the bag! You shouldn’t pick a fight with Oprah Winfrey, right?”
As for the reasoning behind the cancellation, that’s a little less clear. The Eagles QB recently had a run in with a Dallas DJ who had adopted one of his former fight-dogs. While he was cordial, his entourage apparently wasn’t too polite to the DJ, saying “we don’t care about the dog.” It’s possible that such a recent reminder of his criminal record made the QB want to avoid the spotlight for a little while. Still, we won’t know until the re-scheduled Oprah Vick interview happens in the future, and she inevitably asks him why he canceled this time.
