Tom Walter definitely took one for the team Monday! That was when we heard that the Wake Forest baseball coach donates a kidney to Kevin Jordan. When none of his family were a match, Walter didn’t hesitate to step in. Get more of the amazing details, with more photos and videos below.
The freshman outfielder suffers from the autoimmune disease ANCA vasculitis which causes swelling. They found this out in April, as well as the fact that he would need a transplant. He has had to be on dialysis and when none of his family could donate, his coach got tested!
After their first team practice on January 28th, Walter found out he was a match. And though is may seem a little extreme that the Wake Forest baseball coach would choose to donate his own kidney, it was apparently a “no-brainer.”
“When we recruit our guys, we talk about family and making sacrifices for one another,” Walter said before the operation. “It is something we take very seriously. I had the support of my family, Wake Forest and my team. To me it was a no-brainer.”
They are now both recovering in and Atlanta hospital where Dr. Kenneth Newell said the procedures went very well. Last year he started feeling ill and by August 8% of his kidneys were working. Now it is time to wait and see if everything will start working just fine.
Kevin Jordan is a promising young talent who has already been drafted to the New York Yankees amateur draft last summer. He signed with Wake Forest and started last fall, but has had to take this spring off while he recovers. Though it would be a shame not to have him back on the field one day, the main goal now is for him to get healthy and at least live a normal life.
What do you think about the Wake Forest baseball coach donating his kidney to one of his players? It is an amazing story and it shows just how incredible Tom Walter is. After you check out these pictures and video, leave me your thoughts on this story below.
