Meet Kaya Turski. She is the X Games 2011 gold medal winner in the Skiing Slopestyle event. Congratulations! You can read more about her win below.
It’s the 15th edition of the Winter X Games, with the first gold medal of the Games going to Kaya Turski, in the Women’s skiing slopestyle event. She defended her title, having won the gold in the same event last year (video of that is below).
She scored 93.66 in her first run, 35.66 in the second and 27.0 in her third. Keri Herman took second place, while Grete Eliassen came in third. The freeskier was of course elated with her gold medal win.
“I’m obviously ecstatic and really relieved. I put a lot of pressure on myself coming into this event. The girls definitely put on a good show and gave me a run for my money and I’m just happy I pulled through.”
It’s hard to believe that just last April she had torn her ACL and here we are today, reporting on her win. Turski has had her fair share of injuries and spoke to Skiing Mag (before the torn ACL injury in April) explaining the injuries she had sustained over the years.
“I had a big impact crash and split my pancreas in half. It was a random, freak thing. I was in the hospital for two weeks and had pancreatic surgery. I didn’t ski for nine months. Right when I came back, I tore my ACL and meniscus and had to take another year off. I’ve also dislocated my shoulder. One day, I’d like to get into sports medicine. I can relate to a lot of athletes from having a lot of major injuries.”
Amazing, right? To be riddled with all those injuries, come back to compete and continue to win. Not bad for a girl who didn’t even start skiing until she was a student at the University of Denver (2001-2005). She went to high school in Minnesota, where she was a member of the ice hockey team, and was amazed at how much her previous skating experience was relevant to her skiing.
Congratulations Kaya Turski on your Winter X Games 2011 Gold medal win in the Slopestyle Skiing event! We’ve got video of her win from last year below, as soon as video of this year’s win is available we will update the post.
