Eighteen year old Astros prospect Delino DeShields Jr. was arrested this past weekend in Georgia after being pulled over for driving under the influence. After driving the wrong way on a one-way street, DeShields was also cited for underage alcohol possession!
A first-round draft pick, who received a reported $2.15 million signing bonus, here’s what general manager Ed Wade had to say about the arrest of his player!
“It’s a police matter, and we’ll deal with it when appropriate,” Wade reported to newspapers.
Not a good way to start off a pro career with a slew of misdemeanors, three to be exact! DeShields Jr.’s time behind bars ended up being a two hour stint after he was taken in by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department at 1:06 a.m. The young baseball player, who will reportedly play second base for the team, was let go on $2,500 bail.
Delino’s camp has yet to comment on his run in with police over the weekend! The baseball player is the son of former major leaguer Delino DeShields, “who will be the manager of Cincinnati’s Class A Dayton (Ohio) farm team this year.”
If convicted, under Georgia law, Delino could be looking at a year of jail time, not to mention community service to be completed, and estimated fines anywhere from $300 up to $1,000. His DUI could also land him on probation!
