For Amy Adams, Fighter is just the next movie in a string of successes for the increasingly popular Hollywood heavyweight. Taking the role seriously enough to hire a voice coach in order to perfect a Boston accent, the 36-year-old actress starred alongside Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale in this sure-fire box office hit. While a solid Southie accent and great reviews are more than enough reward for her role, this actress got even more out of her part: a love of boxing. The “Doubt” star says she grew to appreciate the sport because of the chivalry of a man defending his honor.
“Once I started studying Micky’s fights, I started to really fall in love with the gentleman aspect of boxing,” she says, adding that she keeps her spectating of the sport to a minimum. “I get too nervous when I watch it. I feel every punch.”
For Amy Adams, “The Fighter” represents the opportunity to break away from the asexual stigma placed on her after her acclaimed nun’s role in “Doubt.” The new mother just completed the movie before taking a year off to raise her first daughter, Aviana. Still, she said she wanted to invest fully into her character, who plays the girlfriend of an amateur boxer played by Mark Wahlberg.
“I think people — and often actors in particular — are really rough on the Boston accent when they try and do it,” says the Colorado-raised actress. “Mark was on hand, so it was great to have a local boy right there to listen to all the time.”
Playing the boyfriend of the character of Amy Adams, fighter Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) lives in the shadow of his formerly successful older brother Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale). The gritty under-dog tale is being called an Oscar shoe-in and could bring awards for any of the lead roles as well. What do you think of the movie?
