Sonya Curry is a former volleyball standout at Virginia Tech and the mother of Davidson basketball star Stephen Curry. You can see her biography, photos and video below.
Sonya Curry was in the stands today cheering on her son when Davidson’s improbable run came to an end with a 59-57 loss to #1 seed Kansas. Curry had an outstanding tournament, averaging 34.3 points per game with wins over Gonzaga, Georgetown and the University of Wisconsin.
Sonya Adams Curry went to Radford High School where she was a standout basketball and volleyball player winning state championships. She chose to play volleyball at Virginia Tech, which is also where she met her husband, former NBA Star Dell Curry. Sonya was a freshman and Dell was a junior when he first asked her out after one of her games. They married in 1988 and obviously passed some athletic genes on to their son.
“It’s exciting,” Sonya Curry said Saturday from Detroit. “I can’t believe that’s my child on the court because I still see him as a little boy. … On the other hand, from being an athlete myself and loving sports, I can look and say, ‘You know what? He really is good.'”
Sonya has another son, Seth, who will be playing basketball at Liberty University next year. She appreciates the way her kids play hard and gives herself a little credit for that quality. “He doesn’t stop until the buzzer goes off. That was kind of me.” Sonya is also very spiritual and tries to pass that on, too. She sends him text messages with scripture passages before games to help keep him grounded and keep focused on what is important.
