Congratulations go out to Drew Brees, Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year for 2010. It’s an award very much deserved. Read more, plus see photos and video of the New Orleans Saints QB below.

There should be no surprise whatsoever naming Drew Brees Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year. His performance while on the gridiron or off simply separates him from the rest. He was formally announced with the sports mag’s honor on the Today show, and you can see video of the announcement below.

The New Orleans Saints quarterback, along with his teammates, gave New Orleans their first Super Bowl win in franchise history in February.

Of the honor, Brees said:

“The more that I’ve learned about the award and that it goes well beyond what you accomplish on the field, that it’s very much about what you do off the field as well, with community service and your family, makes the award even more special to me.”

Terry McDonell, editor of Sports Illustrated, had this to say about the 31 year old fan favorite:

“Drew’s accomplishments go far beyond delivering a Super Bowl title to a notoriously long-suffering franchise, He has been a driving force in a battered city’s ongoing efforts to rebuild and renew while simultaneously resurrecting his own career.”

Brees came to New Orleans in 2006, shortly after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. He, along with his wife Brittany, formed the Brees Dream Foundation in 2003, and according to Brees’ website, the foundation has donated over $6,000,000 to charities in New Orleans, San Diego and West Lafayette/Purdue communities.

With Drew Brees Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year, he becomes the fifth NFL quarterback to be presented with the honor — previous QB’s honored include Terry Bradshaw (’79), Joe Montana (’90), Tom Brady (’05) and Brett Favre (’07).

Congratulations to you Drew, from your admirers at Right Fielders! We couldn’t be happier for you, and it’s an award well merited! Readers, feel free to leave your comments and congrats to Drew in the comment section, plus photos and a related video is below.
