Meet Ekaterina Gordeeva, she is the fabulous, stunning and very talented Figure Skater from Russia, together with her husband Sergei Grinkov they made history on the ice, a Hall Of Fame skating couple, but her happiness was shattered with his tragic death. Ekaterina Alexandrovna Gordeeva was born in Moscow, Russia on May 28, 1971 making this her age as 39 years old. Her mother is Elena Lvovna Gordeeva and her father Aleksandr Alekseevich Gordeev who died two years ago due to a heart attack, her younger sister is Maria Aleksandrovna Gordeeva.
Ekaterina or Katia as most people call her began skating at age 4 when she joined the Central Red Army Club and subsequently the Children and Youth Sports School even though her dad wished both his daughters would become dancers and join the Bolshoi Ballet Company. By age 11 her coach Vladimir Zaharov paired her up with Sergei Grinkov who was 15 at the time, he started skating ever since he was 5 years old.
Two years later they won the 1984 World Junior Championships, 1985 World Junior Figure Skating Championships and the Skate Canada International, in 1986 won the gold at the Soviet Championships and the World Championships, in 1987 they won the gold medal at The Winter Olympics also at the European Championships and won the 1987 Prize of Moscow News. A year later they were the skaters to win first place at the 1988 Love Story on Ice and gold medal at the 1988 Olympics.
In 1989 they won the gold at the World and European Championships and were awarded with the NHK Trophy. They won the 1990 World Professional Championships once again the following year.
1991 was a great year for the young skaters who by then had announced they were officially dating, on April 20, 1991 they got married on the ice and on April 28, 1991 they got married at a beautiful church in Moscow.
Ekaterina became a mother of her daughter Daria Sergeevna Grinkova on September 11, 1992 in Morristov, New Jersey. Little Daria was just three when on November 20, 1995 while her parents were practicing for their next Stars On Ice Tour in Lake Placid, her father collapsed on the ice, he died due to a severe heart failure. He was just 28 years old.
Devastated with the death of her beloved husband Katia turned to her daughter, but when fellow skaters planned a skating event in memory of Sergei the following year she announced that after so much time and for the first time in her life she was skating in the event that was called Sergei Grinkov: Celebration of a Life. Ekaterina found joy on the ice so she began skating solo from that time on.
My Sergei: A Love Story, was the 1996 book written by Ekaterina and SI writer, two years later she wrote her childhood story and wishes for her little daughter Daria in her second book A Letter for Daria.
Daria Joined her talented, beautiful mother in the Got Milk ad also in the 1997 and 1998 movie Snowden On Ice, Daria also joined her mother on the ice in 2003 in a Mother & Daughter Duet. They have skated together several times ever since soon a new member of the family will join them.
Ekaterina found love again in fellow Russian figure skater Ilia Alexandrovich Kulik who she married on June 10, 2002 in San Francisco, their little daughter Elizaveta Ilinichna Kulik aka Liza was born on June 15, 2001 in Los Angeles, California. Liza joined her mother and big sister on the ice at the 2003 Kristi Yamaguchi’s Family & Friends which they continue to skate together along Kulik in 2005 and 2007.
Katia quit skating that same year, but she created her foundation Skate for the Heart, in honor of Sergei, its mission is to raise awareness and raises funds for heart diseases, heart disease struck her life once again when her father died due to a heart attack in 2008.
This September she paired up with former Canadian hockey player Valeri Bure (Candace Cameron’s (Full House) husband) in the second season of the Canadian reality show Battle of the Blades, they were crowned champions on November 22, 2010.
Ekaterina Gordeeva and her beloved family used to live in Connecticut, but relocated to California in 2007. They live happily ever after in a house at Newport Beach. See their picture here.
