Negativity seems to be surrounding this film more than anything else. Today, Nov. 5, Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls” movie based on a 1974 play by Ntozake Shange premieres in theatres. It is definitely controversial and has a power packed cast, so why the criticism? Keep reading below for more details, photos and videos.
It’s a tough subject to face, but one that the director felt very passionate about tackling. He tried to bring the ideals of the play into this millenia, but that is where problems seem to start. No one else has tried to bring this work to film and we may have found out why.
I personally think it’s a great idea to have an empowering film like this and now knowing some about the original play I can see why to Tyler Perry, “For Colored Girls” seemed to be a great project. And boy did he get a wonderful cast. Stars of this new movie are Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Jackson, Loretta Devine, Thandie Newton, Kerry Washington, Anika Noni Rose, Phylicia Rashad, Kimberly Elise and Tessa Thompson. That is one thing reviewers are very pleased with and the acting is said to be extraordinary. The actresses seemed to really enjoy the challenging roles and subject matter as well. Check out Thandie Newton’s thoughts here.
However past that it seems that turning this award winning play into a modern film was maybe too much for him. According to a review from the Huffington Post, the beginning of the movie where each lady’s story is being weaved into the others appears punctuated and may be hard to follow. Another criticism is that the older language and poems Perry tried to incorporate seemed out of place.
Now these are just some of the opinions out there, and I am sure there will be many others. I suggest checking it out yourself and making your own opinion about it. That is my plan. It has to be tough to adapt a very theatrical story to a modern film screen. I am interested to see it and take it in for myself.
What do you think? Have the early reviews scared you off, or are you going to check out “For Colored Girls?” Tyler Perry took a big risk with this project and I wonder how it will pay off. Be sure to check out these pictures and video then leave me your comments below.
