As you probably are already well aware UFC 123 has an amazing fight card, and yes, the Matt Hughes, BJ Penn fight is on it! Get the scoop below.
First, let’s get started by seeing how these two matchup:
Matt Hughes – Record: 45-7-0 Height: 5’9” Weight: 170 lbs Nickname (none)
BJ Penn – Record: 15-6-1 Height: 5’ 9” Weight: 155 Nickname: ‘The Prodigy’
As you can see Hughes holds the advantage in two categories – experience and weight. He has fought in nearly 3 times as many bouts as Penn, but has nearly the same amount of losses. Also, even though they are the same height, Hughes is about 15 lbs heavier than ‘The Prodigy’. Will the weight difference play a factor in this fight? It might give Hughes a slight advantage over the smaller Penn, but I don’t believe it will be a deciding factor. The Hawaiian is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert, while Hughes, an Ultimate Fighting Championship hall of famer, is a wrestler, which in this aspect Penn probably has the advantage. Plus, Penn has already beaten Hughes for the welterweight title back at UFC 46.
As great as both of these fighters are I couldn’t imagine this being a lopsided victory for either of them. I’m looking forward to watching these two MMA warriors compete in what could easily end up being the fight of the year. And say, even if Matt Hughes vs. BJ Penn does turn out to be a snooze fest, which I doubt it will, we still have the headliner Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson vs. Lyoto Machida to look forward to.
