In a few years it will be the 75th anniversary of the classic movie ‘Gone With the Wind.’ In order to prepare for this, Scarlett O’Hara’s dresses need to be repaired. For more on what they are doing, including more a video, keep reading below the picture.
The Harry Ransom Center in Texas needed to raise approximately $30,000 to properly fix the lovely gowns. They made an appeal early in August to the public in order to help raise these funds. And how did it go?
Thanks to 600 people coming from 44 states and 13 countries, they will be able to accomplish the goal of restoring Scarlett O’Hara’s dresses. The 1939 movie was an instant classic, but the outfits were not designed to be on display for 75 years!
“These dresses have been under a lot of stress. Film costumes weren’t meant to last, they are only meant to last through the duration of filming.”
Therefore at this point they are a little worn out. Jill Morena is and assistant for collection at the centre. She described the condition of the beautiful historical costumes.
“The costumes are in fragile condition and cannot currently be exhibited. There are areas where the fabric has been worn through, fragile seams and other problems.”
Therefore in order to hold on to these historical icons restoration needed to happen. They have been on many tours and on display a lot over the years. Now they will be properly taken care of so they will last hopefully another 75 years. Morena continued:
“Conservation work and custom supports for storage and display are essential components in ensuring that the Gone With The Wind costumes can be enjoyed for years to come.”
I for one am happy to see they will be safe! All of Scarlett O’Hara’s dresses from ‘Gone With the Wind’ were amazing and need to be taken care of. Let me know what you think about the efforts after you check out this video.
