A South American woman who had been steadily gaining weight for the past year found out from a doctor that her ballooning waistline wasn’t a food issue, it was a giant tumor. Argentina’s best doctors worked for eight hours straight to remove the mass, which is said to be one of the world’s largest tumors. Get the full story, with pictures and video below!

Tumor

Oscar Lopez , Surgical Coordinator at Gandulfo hospital in Lomas de Zamora, just outside Buenos Aires, said he was “shocked” by the size of the woman’s growth. The tumor was removed from a housewife who weighed 343 pounds so this mass was 20 percent of her body weight. Typically, surgeons are able to drain tumors before they are removed, reducing their size by a factor of five. But this woman’s growth was reportedly as solid as a rock, and had to be removed at full size.

Ranking near the top of the list of things you never want to hear from your doctor, Dr. Lopez’s statement says it all.

“At first sight, one could see it was going to be a big tumor, but not that big. We were totally shocked!”

If you want to see graphic pictures of the giant tumor (Argentina’s new claim to fame) check them out here. The woman survived the 8-hour surgery, which saw her ovaries and uterus removed as well, in stable condition. Before the surgery she weighed 343 pounds, she later left the hospital a whopping 70 pounds lighter! Take that slim-fast!

“We removed a tumor whose weight is comparable to that of a four-year-old child. I’ve never seen anything like it in my 34 years of medical service. In layman’s terms, it was as if this woman had been pregnant with quintuplets”, said Dr. Lopez.

It took the 54-year-old housewife 18 months to grow the giant tumor. Argentina’s doctors still aren’t sure why she didn’t get it checked out sooner. Remaining anonymous for obvious reasons, the doctors say they’ll be keeping a close eye on her for additional weight gain. What do you think of the record-breaking growth? While it’s not the world’s largest growth, it certainly makes one question putting on a few extra pounds.

So what is the world’s largest tumor? The largest tumor ever recorded weighed 302 pounds according to the Guinness Book of World Records so she is lucky. Six years ago a 175 pound tumor was removed from a patient in Europe, a story you can read about here.

So as for giant tumors, the Argentina woman has it easy. How much weight would you have to gain before getting a check-up? Voice your opinion in the comment section! And don’t miss the video below!
