Barclays Golf Tournament: Jim Furyk Disqualified For Oversleeping!

Yep, you read the headline right! Jim Furyk was disqualified from the Barclays Golf Tournament today after oversleeping and missing his 7:30 AM Pro-Am start time. That bites! Get more details on the story plus photos and video below.

How did he oversleep? He usually sets the alarm clock on his cell, and when he woke up this morning at 7:23 AM only to find that his cell phone lost power some time through the night and of course did not work, he made a mad dash to the course and got there at 7:35 AM.

He had a tee time of 7:30 AM. Furyk described his morning:

“I always use my phone as an alarm and it had no power this morning. I don’t know if something happened with the charger or what but I never got it. I woke up at 7:23 and tore out of there, put a pair of pants on and shirt…. I have no belt or socks and my shoes aren’t tied yet. I actually got into the locker room at 7:35, but I guess I had to be on the tee.”

PGA rules state, “anyone failing to show for the pro-am will be disqualified from the event except when it is an injury or a family emergency.”

Okay fine, rules are rules. BUT…as Waggle Room reminds us – Phil Mickelson missed his pro-am tee time in 2007 at the Byron Nelson Championship because of poor weather conditions that prevented his plane from arriving at the airport, blah blah blah. Was he disqualified? Nope. Yep, complaints ensued, but it did nothing.

So when Mickelson was asked today on how he felt about Furyk being disqualified, here’s what he said:

“Well, the rule itself applies to only half the field. So if you’re going to have a rule that does not apply to everybody, because not everybody played the Pro-Am, you cannot have it affect the competition. It’s got to be a different penalty. It can’t be disqualification if it only applies to half the field. So this rule — it’s not protecting the players. It’s not protecting the sponsors. It applies to only half the field and yet it affects the integrity of the competition.”

He does make a good point. He made his beef known to PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem.

The Barclays Golf Tournament, held at Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey, begins on Thursday.
