Cassandra Pettigrew’s husband was born and raised in Georgia. He earned his popularity as one of United Stated best sprinters, gold medalist at the 1991 and 1999 World Championships, another gold at the 2000 Olympics plus several important achievements, but it was his medals that he returned after he confessed of taking banned substances while competing. After his retirement from track he became a track and field coach at schools in Raleigh, followed by some time at his alma mater St. Augustine and finally at the University of North Carolina where he was an assistant coach for the Tar Heels Sprinters in Chapel Hill, North Carolina not far from the place his dead body was found on August 10, 2010.
40 year old Cassandra R. Pettigrew was a name that we never heard before, it is so sad to know about Cassandra under these terrible circumstances. There’s not much information about her. We did find one Cassandra Pettigrew who went to King High School where she graduated in 1988 and later went to St. Augustine’s college where she graduated with a degree in Political Science and a Bachelor in Arts on 1992, then from 1993 to 1996 she studied Public Administration at the North Carolina State University. We also found one Cassandra Pettigrew from Apex, North Carolina who competed at the 29th Annual Run for the Roses last February (#263), but as I told you we can’t confirm it is the same person so from the accurate facts we know that she was his wife and mother of seven year old son Antonio Duane Pettigrew Jr. born on May 4th, 2003 who weighed 8 pounds 6 ounces.
It was Cassandra who told the police after midnight on Tuesday the 10th to report her husband as missing from her house in Apex, Wake County, a suburb in Raleigh, North Carolina. The last he was seen was at 10:00 a.m on Monday. Sadly that same Tuesday August 10, 2010 at exactly 03:15 his body was found locked inside his car by two friends who were searching for him when he didn’t showed up to work that day. They found his 2008 white Dodge Aspen parked on a bridge on US 751. They saw him apparently sleeping but when they called him he didn’t answer. He was lying lifeless in the back seat of his car with a bottle of sleeping pills, Unisom, next to him, his car was found some place on the road between his house and the university. The news was reported by Chatham County Sheriff Major Gary Blankenship.
“It is unclear what happened but his body was found at 0315 local time on Tuesday in the seat of his car parked by the side of a thoroughfare in our county. There was a bottle of sleeping pills next to his body. We don’t know if he took them accidentally or intentionally, but we suspect that it was intentional. No foul play is suspected. We won’t find be able to confirm what happened until we find out the results of his toxicology report, which will take a few weeks. Obviously we don’t know if it was intentionally or accidental at this point," Blankenship said of the cause of death. "We might not ever know."
Cassandra’s husband’s body was taken to the Chapel Hill for an autopsy . Cassandra’s husband was just 42 years old. Our thoughts and prayers are with her, her son, other family, friends, students and fans.
