Talk about the ultimate family vacation. For the Crafton family, 7 years at sea in a boat with living quarters the size of a minivan was a dream come true. Tom and Kathy raised their two kids through the travels, and saw countless exotic locations from Alaska to New Zealand. Get the full story, with photos and video below!
Tom and Kathy were a successful couple by all standards before their trip. Tom was a family psychologist, and Kathy a nurse. They owned two houses in Alaska, and were raising two kids by 2003.
“Economically we were in great shape,” Tom said. “But it didn’t mean anything.” Kathy added, “I realized that I really want to spend time knowing my children and raising them – not cleaning the bathrooms.”
Then, one day, they made the biggest decision of their lives. They quit their jobs, sold their houses, and used the money to buy the best ocean faring vessel they could find, a Taiwanese-built Hans Christian with living quarters smaller than a standard bedroom. But once they left harbor, all their problems dissolved.
“We just seemed to get along better the longer we were out there. The day we moved onto the boat, the sibling rivalry stopped. I don’t think they ever complained, not once.“
Travelling the Americas for the first two years, the rest of the Crafton family’s 7 years at sea were spent crisscrossing the oceans, bartering for food with locals, and exploring new places. But now, out of food and money, their dream journey had to come to an end.
“I went to a Wal-Mart the first week we were back, and I had to come home and take a nap,” said Tom. “It’s way too soon for that. Some of our cruising friends warned us about reentry. Baby steps, baby steps.”
Movie rights! This family may be broke right now, but one quick and easy way to recoup some funds would be selling the movie rights to their epic story. What do you think of the Crafton family’s 7 years at sea? Obviously the parents enjoyed it, but how do you think it affected the children? Let me know in the comment section!
