Back in January, a British publication printed lies that the philanthropic couple was breaking up, which threatened to damage the reputation of Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie. Awarded damages will now be paid to the couple after the court found the newspaper guilty. Read more about this situation below, with more photos and a video.
The News of the World publication claimed the pair had visited a divorce lawyer, and had already discussed splitting their assets and custody of their children. It looks like they didn’t get their facts straight and the two actors sued due to misrepresentation of personal information and violating the 1998 Data Protection Act.
Though the couple wasn’t present, court proceedings in London’s High Court concluded Thursday, and the publication promised to not only pay their “fine” but also to publish and apology. The amount they are getting is undisclosed, but we have heard that with Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie awarded damages, they will most likely be donated to their charity, the Jolie-Pitt Foundation.
This story never really had any backing, and I am curious where or why the story started. The lawyer that Brad was supposedly meeting with was Sorrell Trope, but he confirmed that he had never met them.
“I have never met… your clients or had any involvement with either of them. The foregoing is true with respect to all other members of this firm.”
I don’t think the couple wanted to cause any harm, but when the paper never negated the rumor, something had to be done! Their attorney Keith Schilling stated:
“When the News of the World failed to publicly retract the allegations and apologize for them — thereby leaving their readers in the dark as to the true position — the couple felt they had no alternative than to sue. Today’s victory marks the end of the litigation brought by Brad and Angelina.”
Well the power couple is still doing very well and seemed as happy as could be at the recent ‘Salt’ premiere. What do you think about the newspaper’s actions and Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie awarded damages? Let me know in the comment section below, after you check out these photos and video.
