George Steinbrenner’s health had been declining the last few years and there were rumors that the 80-year-old had Alzheimer’s.
A statement was released by his family earlier today:
“It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing,” the statement said. “He was an incredible and charitable man. First and foremost he was devoted to his entire family – his beloved wife, Joan; his sisters, Susan Norpell and Judy Kamm, his children, Hank, Jennifer, Jessica and Hal; and all his grandchildren. He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again.”
Steinbrenner had just celebrated his 80th birthday on July 4th. Services for the Yankee legend will be private. Read more below to find out more about George Steinbrenner’s wife, Joan Steinbrenner.
As a biography, here is what we know, as information on her is scarce. She was born Elizabeth Joan Zieg. Her family is from Ohio, where her father was in Real Estate Development. George and Joan met in Columbus, where George attended Ohio State University. The two were married in May of 1956. Reportedly, at one time she had filed for divorce from George, but that request was later canceled. Together they had four children – Hank, Hal, Jessica and Jennifer. Coincidentally, the Steinbrenner clan all live in Tampa, FL.
Both she and her husband George were devoted to donating to several charities over the years. Our deepest sympathies go out to Joan Steinbrenner, George Steinbrenner’s wife, as she goes through this difficult time. You can see more photos plus a video of Joan below.
