Germany was coming out strong, fearless and hungry for the title, while Spain is among one of the favorite teams because of the big names they carry and the only one left after Argentina and Brazil were eliminated.

Spain’s first game at this World Cup turned out to be a complete failure, not just because they lost against Switzerland but because they gave a poor performance. We saw them get better in the next games, but fans were still expecting bigger results on the score board from them, either way they got where they are now and might even give Germany a big surprise.

For Spain, Germany is no team that they will be afraid of after all they beat them (1-0) at the UEFA Euro 2008, maybe they can repeat history at South Africa.

The game started and both teams began to throw powerful shots, but both goalkeepers managed to block them every time, the defense on both teams was fantastic, Germany’s Bastian Schweinsteiger was the man in their last game, but he knew and accepted the quality of player Spain has as he said that they were playing against one of the best teams in the world (#2 according to FIFA).

In this game we were expecting to see the most dangerous approach by David Villa, but instead it was the great Carles Puyol who got Neuer in trouble after Xavi’s corner kick.

And Iker Casillas got his too when Trochowski threw a long shot in the 32nd minute and Spain attacked again on the 45+2 minute when Pedro also threw a long distance shot that Germany’s goalkeeper Neuer  blocked. The firs half ended and German fans began to wonder where was the team that has been playing in previous games?

In the second half Xabi Alonso came into the picture when Pedro fought his way between Boateng and Friedrich, unfortunately Alonso’s shot was outside the goal area and now Joachim Loew made his first change sending Jansen for Boateng, while no activity was happening on Vicente del Bosque’s bench.

Germany was starting to look impatient so was their captain Philipp Lahm who committed his second foul giving Spain a free kick by Xavi Alonso that found Puyol’s head who sent it directly to the net scoring Spain’s winning goal on the 73rd minute

Germany kept on fighting, but Spain knew they just needed to keep calm, defend and wait for the whistle, and it was just what happened when the final whistle sounded after 3 minutes in the injury time. Spain defeated Germany!!

Spain is going to the finals against Netherlands on Sunday and Germany will face Uruguay the day before. Note this, Spain is going to the finals for the first time in 13 appearances at any World Cup, their previous best result was in the 1950 World Cup in Brazil, where the host lost to Uruguay and Sweden took the third place.

Here are the players at the Durban Stadium in Durban, South Africa.
