Meet Shalane Flanagan, a 2008 Olympic hopeful distance runner. See photos and a biography of Shalane below.
**UPDATE – 8/15/08 Congratulations to Shalane Flanagan for winning the bronze medal in the 10,000 meters event at the Beijing Olympics today. She was unsure when she crossed the finish line if she had in fact taken third place:
“When we finished, I thought maybe I was third, but I had no idea,” said Flanagan, who raised three fingers, wondering if she was third. “I didn’t want to celebrate too soon because maybe I was fourth.”
Amazingly enough, she almost did not compete in the race because she was suffering from food poisoning. What helped her through the illness? “Good old Immodium.” Now that’s an endorsement deal waiting in the works….
Shalane Flanagan is in the news as she recently won the women’s 8k race at the USA Cross Country Championships at Mission Bay Park.
As a biography, Shalane was born on July 8m 1981 in Boulder, Colorado. She is the daughter of Steve Flanagan, a U.S. World Cross Country Champion and marathon runner and Cheryl Trewogy, a five time U.S. Cross Country Champion and former marathon world record holder. Running is definitely in Shalane’s genes!
Shalane spent her childhood in Marblehead, Massachusetts and attended Marblehead High School. She was on the cross country and track team as well as the soccer and swim teams. While there, she was a three time All-State cross country participant, and placed first in the mile and two mile events, where she set a record of 4:46.
She attended the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and won two national cross country titles – in 2002 and 2003. She would go on to have a stellar track career while there. As part of her training, she would run about 70 miles a week. She graduated from the university in 2004.
Shalane moved on to the pro level in 2004 and has improved her times in the 3000 and 5000 meters – 8:33.25 and 14:44.80 respectively. Both of those times are American records. See more of Shalane’s accomplishments here.
