USA vs. Ghana: Results, Highlights, Goals (Photos, Video)

The United States arrived at the the royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenberg, South Africa where they faced Ghana and to secure their pass to the next round at the 2010 World Cup. Keep reading to know all the highlights, results and players at this match plus check out the photos and video below.

The match between USA and Ghana became the first match of this second round at the World Cup to get extra time and the second team to go home. Sadly this time it was the USA who packed the bags with their dreams shattered while Africa celebrated their next step at this Cup as their only team to represent Africa.

For the USA ranking 14th this meant the ninth time at the World Cup and third to advance from the first round while Ghana ranks 23rd. They made their first appearance at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and their first time to advance with the first 16 teams on the second round

Ghana’s Prince Boateng opened the score 1-0 on the 5th minute and they were not giving the USA any chances to even up with them, but it was a penalty shot at the 62nd minute by Landon Donovan that first touched the pole that tied the score 1-1.

This draw meant both teams would have to go to extra time and the first match to do so. As the first 15 minutes began the Black Stars didn’t waste anytime to take the lead when Asamoah Gyan scored the winning goal at the 97th minute leading the Americans with pretty much nothing to do, they missed opportunities, made mistakes when passing the ball and in the end they had to face the horrible consequences for those mistakes becoming the second team to say goodbye to South Africa.
