New Zealand’s match against Slovakia took place at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, South Africa, A stadium partially crowded but still with few people the vuvuzelas were loud, I like those,but I think they are too loud for the players’ taste.
Anyway, New Zealand’s team coached by Ricki Herbert and Slovakia by Vladimir Weiss was ready on the field. These are the players:
|1 Jan Mucha||Mark Paston|
|11 Robert Vittek||9 Shane Smeltz|
|18Erik Jendrisek||10 Chris Killen
14 Rory Fallon
|7 Vladimir Weiss||3 Tony Lochhead|
|6 Zdeno Strba||7 Simon Elliot|
|9 Stanislav Sestak||11 Leo Bertos|
|17 Marek Hamsik||Defense|
|Defense||4 Winston Reid|
|5 Radoslav Zabavnik||5 Ivan Vicelich|
|16 Jan Durica||6 Ryan Nelsen|
|4 Marek Cech||19 Tommy Smith|
|3 Martin Krtel|
For Slovakia this was their first appearance at the World Cup now as an independent country and they were eager to leave their mark, but New Zealand was making their comeback after their terrible performance at the 1982 World Cup in Spain, where they lost all of their three matches. Today they were ready to erase that shame of their record, but did they?
New Zealand has Shane Smelts, but still Slovakia appeared as the favorite team to take the three points.
The first 45 minutes of the game went by with no significant event, but quite an entertaining match with just a little bit of trouble for Mike Paston.
As predicted the combination of Smeltz and Fallon was outstanding but at the end and on the minute 50 it was Robert Vittek who took the opportunity to mark Slovakia’s first goal even though he was between two of New Zealand’s defenders.
Slovakia was aiming for their second goal just 12 minutes after, but Winston Reid was ready to stop them. New Zealand didn’t find the weak spot where they could get in, as the 90 were done, they only had 3 minutes in the injury time and Smeltz finally found his way and Winston Reid was there to receive the pass and directly into the score zone. He saved his team but sadly for him he got a yellow card after removing his shirt, the match ended 1-1.
Their next match will be on June 20 where Slovakia will face Paraguay and New Zealand with Italy.
